Whiskey Tasting in Belfast: The Titanic City Guide (2026)
Sip & Learn: Volume 94

Dublin often gets the glory, but Belfast has the grit.
In the 19th century, Belfast was the whiskey capital of the world. It produced more spirit than any other city on the island of Ireland.
After a century of silence, the sleeping giant has woken up. Going for a whiskey tasting in Belfast is now one of the most exciting experiences in Europe.
The city is home to the most famous Victorian gin palaces in the UK, hidden alleyway pubs, and—for the first time in 90 years—working distilleries right in the Titanic Quarter.
In this guide, we will take you through the cobbled streets of the Cathedral Quarter and the historic docks to find the perfect dram.

1. The Duke of York: The Icon
You cannot plan a whiskey tasting in Belfast without visiting Commercial Court.
This cobbled alleyway is home to The Duke of York. It is arguably the most photographed pub in Northern Ireland, famous for its hanging flower baskets and murals.
But inside, it is a shrine to Irish Whiskey.
The walls are lined with thousands of rare bottles, mirror advertisements, and memorabilia. It stocks one of the largest collections of Irish Whiskey in the city, including rare Redbreast and Midleton Very Rare vintages.
The “Friend at Hand”:
Right next door is their sister shop, “The Friend at Hand.” It is a museum-shop hybrid that sells only Irish Whiskey. It is the best place in the city to buy a souvenir bottle.
What is Irish Whiskey?

2. The Crown Liquor Saloon: Victorian Luxury
Just opposite the Europa Hotel stands a National Trust monument that also serves beer.
The Crown Liquor Saloon is one of the finest examples of a Victorian Gin Palace in the world. It features stained glass windows, a granite bar, and gas lighting.
The Snugs:
The best way to enjoy a whiskey tasting in Belfast here is to grab a “Snug.” These are private wooden booths with doors that you can close. In the Victorian era, they were used by people who didn’t want to be seen drinking.
Today, they are the perfect spot to order a flight of Bushmills and soak in the atmosphere.
3. Titanic Distillers: The New History
Belfast built the Titanic. Now, they are distilling whiskey in the same spot.
Titanic Distillers is located in the historic Thompson Graving Dock Pump House. This is the actual building that pumped the water out of the dock where the Titanic was built.
It is the first working distillery in Belfast in almost 90 years.
The Tour:
It is a unique blend of industrial heritage and modern distilling. You walk among the giant original pumps and see the new copper pot stills.
They produce a Single Malt and a Premium Blend. Their “Dock Workers” tour allows you to taste their spirit right at the edge of the dry dock. It is atmospheric, ghostly, and delicious.

4. Bittles Bar: The Flatiron
If you walk near Victoria Square, you will see a strange, thin, triangular building. This is Bittles Bar.
It is one of the city’s “Flatiron” buildings. The bar is tiny, narrow, and walls are covered in paintings of literary and political figures.
It is famous for its whiskey selection.
The owner is a passionate advocate for Irish spirits. If you want to try something off the beaten path—like a Spot Whiskey or a rare Teeling Single Cask—this is the place.
Pro Tip:
It gets very crowded. Go in the mid-afternoon for a quiet dram. Avoid Friday nights if you want to have a conversation about the whiskey.
5. McConnell’s Distillery: The Prison Dram
This is the newest addition to the whiskey tasting in Belfast scene.
McConnell’s was one of the biggest brands in the world in the 1800s before it went bust. In 2024, it returned.
The new distillery is located inside the A-Wing of the historic Crumlin Road Gaol (Jail).
Yes, you are drinking whiskey in a Victorian prison.
The experience is incredible. You can tour the cells, learn about the history of the prison, and then taste the McConnell’s Sherry Cask and 5-Year-Old blends. The setting is haunting, but the whiskey is full of life.
